European Landscapes are a result of long-term transformation serving economical needs. Often parts of them are seen now as “ideal landscapes” representing charm, harmony and historical continuity, a cultural heritage. On the other hand these landscapes have as always to functioning in a modern economic process. They are under constant transformation pressure and have to adapt to the societal needs. The European Landscape Convention emphasizes the cultural, ecological and social importance of landscapes and approves a sustainable development in harmony between economy, ecology and social requirements.景观设计师谈景观www.lachina.org
To steer the further development it is necessary to understand the transformation process in the past and actually, its present drivers and how they interfere with landscapes. In the regards European landscapes are an interesting study object to learn about landscape functionality and changes, to compare with other landscapes overseas, to model transformation processes in its influences to landscapes and to investigate the strong relation between society and natural conditions. 景观设计师谈景观www.lachina.org
The European IALE Conference 2009 especially attempts to give a look at the challenges of the 20th century, as well as to present and discuss the emerging fields of landscape ecology and to proceed together to design a sustainable landscape development.

The organisation of a European landscape oriented IALE Conference is a unique opportunity to bring new insights into landscape ecology, to debate and reflect on the specific challenges of these landscapes, and to identify future needs for research and education. It is intended that this Conference will attract researchers and planners in Europe, but also all those who are interested in sharing other perspectives that may contribute to a definition of functions, values and problems of their features.
The Conference will therefore contribute to a better understanding of the landscape ecological characteristics of the European landscapes and future management options for maintenance and enhancement of the inherent capital. The IALE EU Conference 2009 in Salzburg is dedicated to the topic of "European Landscapes in Transformation - Challenges for Landscape Ecology and Management". This overall topic is subdivided into seven symposium headlines which are tailored to a particular audience within the overall topic. Altogether, we see people from the domain of landscape ecology, landscape perception, conservation, modelling, statistics and related fields as the audience for this European conference.
