In China, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE is translated as “ Yuan Lin” or “Jing Guan”?
When foreign landscape architects visit China a great deal of confusion can arise from the translation of LA. While the Chinese names of associations are very specific; when they are translated to English their names become much less exact making it difficult to determine which group they should cooperate with.
When discussing the field of LA in China you must be careful to specify LA-Yuan Lin or LA-Jing Guan, two distinct philosophical approaches to LA.
In fact, both LA societies are legitimate state-approved non-profit academic organizations, they differ only in philosophy. LA-Yuan Lin is linked to Chinese culture and deals with the traditional Chinese methods of garden design, while LA-Jing Guan was established in 2006 and is devoted to the modern more scientific approach to LA.
The Disagreement on the Translation of LA in China.
Originally LA was translated as Yuan Lin and dealt only with the traditional method of garden planning. As landscape ecology, landscape architecture, landscape planning, landscape design and other modern concepts from the west, became more widespread in China, more and more landscape architects began to question the translation of Landscape Architecture (LA). This led to the creation of the term "LA-Jing Guan" to encompass the new approach to LA however while the distinction between the two philosophies is quite clear in Chinese the English translation remains the same.

The core argument comes down to LA-Yuan Lin stands for traditional Chinese gardening and LA-Jin Guan stands for what in the West is considered the modern approach to LA.

In 2006 the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan was established with the support of over 400 landscape architects and government officials to represent the modern approach to LA in China.

Starting in 2004 the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in China was petitioned for the creation of the first National standards and a certification system for landscape architects.  In 2006 the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan was established and Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan President Gu Qin was appointed by the government to develop the First Landscape Architects National Occupational Standards, which is used by the Chinese government to certify landscape architects. Later that year the standards of certification were published and the position of Landscape Architect with four levels of qualification was established and listed in the China National Occupational Standards Directory.

Why was Shanghai, China`s first choice for the establishment of the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan? The Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan was established in Shanghai on the grounds that, Shanghai brings together the highest level of national landscape planning and design companies with a team of the best landscape designers, it is the country`s leading landscape design and landscape industry talent location.

Second, Shanghai is the birthplace of Shanghai Culture, what must be mentioned here is that Shanghai Culture, is a sophisticated amalgam of cultures with traditional Chinese roots.  It is a blend of the essences of China`s regional cultures, which has absorbed many Western cultural factors.  Shanghai culture, has its own unique personality, its features are: openness, integration and diversity. Therefore, the unique culture of Shanghai provides the Shanghai Society of LA-Jin Guan a basis for development and growth on a national and worldwide level.

Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan was the first academic organization recognized to train and certify Landscape Architects in China, with strong support of the government at all levels including the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.   Currently all relevant qualifications and training of landscape architects in China are entrusted to the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan. In Shanghai 90% of the Universities with related subjects have partnerships with the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan, and many major Chinese and foreign companies are active members of the Society.

After four years of growth the Shanghai Society of LA-Jing Guan has 2035 members, of which 98% are certified Landscape Architects, also 80% of design firms in the Shanghai area are members as well.
