Neville, 34, wants to build the £6 million flower-shaped home on greenbelt land overlooking Bolton, and has also applied to the council for permission to put up a 180ft wind turbine.

Around 300 people attended a public meeting organised by Bolton council at Harwood Church Methodist Church on Wednesday to speak out against the plans.

 Rona Birch, from the nearby village of Affetside, said: “Why do we have to have this dirty great big house because he has lots of money?

“This could mean there will be future Teletubby houses.”

Another resident added: "This is not a stately home, it is one man’s whim that affects everyone in the village. This application is on greenbelt and it is inappropriate."

 Paul Butler, representing the footballer, insisted the noise from the turbine would not be a problem because the nearest house to Neville’s would be 500 metres away.

The 8,000 sq ft property, which would stand near  Nevilles current 12 bedroom home, will also have  solar panels and a ground source heat pump.

Neville is understood to have had a lot of input in its design and is hoping to take advantage of planning laws which allow the building of housing on greenbelt land providing the designs are “truly outstanding and ground-breaking”.

Mr Butler added: “It is a key part of the application that this is no ordinary house in the greenbelt. Development in rural areas has to be of exceptional design and innovative. I am sure many would agree it is that.

“As a professional planner, I would not take on a scheme unless it was worthwhile.”

Plans for his new home are due to go before Bolton Council’s planning committee on April 1.
